How to use the Word Unscrambler

Enter the letters you have, up to fifteen of them, and press Unscramble. The results list every word in the chosen dictionary that can be built from those letters, longest words first. A letter can only be used as many times as you typed it, so TEAMS can make steam and mates but not tease, which needs two E's.

If you are holding a blank tile, type a question mark. The blank can become any letter, and the letter it stands for is underlined in the results. Blank letters score zero points, the same as in most tile games.

Narrowing the list with Options

  • Dictionary picks how broad the word list is. Common words keeps to everyday vocabulary, while the large US and UK lists add rare, scientific and regional words.
  • Must contain keeps only words with those letters side by side, such as QU or ING.
  • Starts with and Ends with are useful when you need to build off a letter already on the board.
  • Shortest word hides short words when you only care about long plays.

What the point values mean

Each word shows a point total using the standard English tile values: one point for common letters like E, A and R, up to ten for Q and Z. Board bonuses such as double-word squares are not included, so treat the number as the word's base value.

Frequently asked questions

Is this tool free?

Yes. Everything on this site is free to use and works in any modern browser on phones, tablets and computers.

Why is a word I know missing?

Try a larger dictionary from Options. The standard list leaves out very rare words, abbreviations and proper nouns such as names and places. You can also check a single word with the Word Checker.

Can I use this during a game?

That depends on who you are playing with. Many players use it to study, to settle a debate after the game, or to learn new words. In tournaments and most friendly games, looking up words during play is not allowed.

Are my letters saved?

No. The search runs on your own device and the letters you type are not sent to us. See the Privacy Policy for details.
